Future Psychiatric Nurse and Nursing Professor
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
In 2001 I went to college right out of high school not knowing what I
wanted to be when I grew up. I thought about being a teacher or an EMT, so I
took introductory classes for both professions. Half way through my second
semester, I unexpectedly had to drop out of school and it was not until 2005
that I was able to return to school. During the years I was not at school I
had the opportunity to learn about life the hard way, which made me think
about what I really wanted I life. When I reapplied to college, I remembered
how much I liked the EMT class, but I wanted something more stable. Nursing
fit the bill.
I finally finished the requirements needed to apply to the Nursing program
at the University of Alaska Anchorage, but it has been a year and a half, I
will be able to begin taking the nursing classes in the Ssmmer of 2009. In
the mean time, I have been working toward a second Bachelor’s Degree in
Psychology. I have come to love behavior and mental illness, and want to
apply that knowledge to my future nursing career.
After completing my two undergraduate degrees, I hope to earn a Master’s
Degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
With that degree, I hope to be able to help people with psychological
disorders, or psychological trauma.
I still have not lost the interest of being a teacher that I had years
ago, and have started considering a Ph.D. in Nursing Education. I enjoy
sharing my experiences and teaching others, and there is no better way to
achieve that than in the university. Teaching those that will take my place
when I decide to retire someday, and passing my knowledge along, would be
the most rewarding part of my career.
Since I have returned to college after a couple years away, I better
understand the importance of my education. As a result, I work harder than I
did when I first started college after high school. I have an excellent
academic record, and I earned that record. I consistently apply myself to my
fullest in all my classes, and refuse to let my work be anything less than
my best. All of these aspects of my life and academic career are reasons I
am a qualified candidate for the scholarship.
