My Nursing Experience

Becoming a nurse educator has been my long-term career goal. However,
before I could pursue this goal it was important to me to hone my clinical
skills and gain nursing experience in a variety of settings. After receiving
a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, I became a certificate prepared
Registered Nurse Practitioner and began working for an orthopaedic surgeon.
This experience developed my orthopaedic physical assessment skills,
understanding of human anatomy, and critical thinking ability.

It was not until I started working for a physiatrist in a rehabilitation
setting that I became acutely aware of the complexity of convalescence and
the restoration of an individual’s functional capacity after an injury. I
have also had the opportunity to work in a level III neonatal intensive care
unit, which provided flight-nursing experience as a member of the Neonatal
Transport Team. Furthermore, legal nurse consulting work led to my current
position as a Regional Nursing Manager for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which
includes managing approximately 30 nurses, developing cost-containment
programs, and developing educational classes.

I became a board certified orthopaedic nurse practitioner in 2007 and I
currently serve on the Policy and Bylaws committee for the National
Association of Orthopaedic Nurses. Academically, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA
in the BSN to PhD program at UAMS.

My experiences, achievements, and goals not only make me a qualified
candidate for the CampusRN scholarship, but they also serve as a knowledge
base to share with future nurses in an educational capacity.

Future Psychiatric Nurse and Nursing Professor

In 2001 I went to college right out of high school not knowing what I
wanted to be when I grew up. I thought about being a teacher or an EMT, so I
took introductory classes for both professions. Half way through my second
semester, I unexpectedly had to drop out of school and it was not until 2005
that I was able to return to school. During the years I was not at school I
had the opportunity to learn about life the hard way, which made me think
about what I really wanted I life. When I reapplied to college, I remembered
how much I liked the EMT class, but I wanted something more stable. Nursing
fit the bill.
I finally finished the requirements needed to apply to the Nursing program
at the University of Alaska Anchorage, but it has been a year and a half, I
will be able to begin taking the nursing classes in the Ssmmer of 2009. In
the mean time, I have been working toward a second Bachelor’s Degree in
Psychology. I have come to love behavior and mental illness, and want to
apply that knowledge to my future nursing career.
After completing my two undergraduate degrees, I hope to earn a Master’s
Degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing.
With that degree, I hope to be able to help people with psychological
disorders, or psychological trauma.
I still have not lost the interest of being a teacher that I had years
ago, and have started considering a Ph.D. in Nursing Education. I enjoy
sharing my experiences and teaching others, and there is no better way to
achieve that than in the university. Teaching those that will take my place
when I decide to retire someday, and passing my knowledge along, would be
the most rewarding part of my career.
Since I have returned to college after a couple years away, I better
understand the importance of my education. As a result, I work harder than I
did when I first started college after high school. I have an excellent
academic record, and I earned that record. I consistently apply myself to my
fullest in all my classes, and refuse to let my work be anything less than
my best. All of these aspects of my life and academic career are reasons I
am a qualified candidate for the scholarship.

Further my eudcation

Hi my name is Cynthia Montero, I am a wife and mother of two boys, the
oldest is three, and the youngest is 21 months. I love my family very much.
My husband has been supporting our family for two years while I stay home
and raise the kids. I told my self that I really needed to go to college and
not wait anymore so that we can have a better future. I have always wanted
to be in the medical field, only since I was a little girl. I really want
teen parents to understand that just because your young doesnt mean that
everything is over. Me and my husband are not on any welfare or anything. We
work as hard as we can to stay out of poverty. We are actually buying a
house. Not every 19 year old can say they are buying a house without their
parents help, financially. That is somethig that me and my husband are very
proud of. Now that we have everything that we ned to keep our family safe I
want to futher my education to better myself and to prove to others that I
can become something other than just another teen parent.

For the love of others

I believe that it is a shame that there is such a shortage of male nurses
and I want to proudly and actively work to reverse that. After I gain
valuable experience in the nursing field I want to continue my schooling and
obtain a Doctorate in Nurse Practioning. I wish to then open a practice in a
rural community and become a Primary Family Health Care Provider. What I am
learning now will build the foundation for my entire career and the rest of
my life.
